Kids, Code, and Computer Science is a bi-monthly magazine about kids, programming, computer science, and how we use technology in our daily lives. The magazine recently won a Silver Honor Award from the Parents’ Choice Foundation which called out both the breadth of coverage and the way the magazine features the activities of women and girls as well as men and boys, all from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
The upcoming April issue is about software programming, for example, best practices for coders, how to pick a first language, learning how to code with Code Monster and Try Ruby, the history of computer keyboards, questions to ask when you look for summer tech camps, and more. The current February issue is about Artificial Intelligence.
December and June issues focus on DIY projects while every year the August issue provides ideas for teachers starting the new school year.
The general interest magazine covers these topics, based loosely on the CSTA curriculum standards:
  • Basics of programming and where to learn more
  • Problem solving and collaboration
  • Mathematical foundations of computing and computer science
  • Computational thinking
  • Recognizing and selecting computer devices
  • Community, global, and ethical impacts of technology
The magazine includes general interest articles for kids, teachers, and parents to explore computer science, programming, and technology. The online magazine also includes an exhaustive list of programming languages geared for kids, not only Scratch but also less visible options The Foos, Kodu, Hopscotch, and Codea. Online articles also include lots of curated links for kids to explore a topic at their own pace.
The print version of the magazine is designed mostly for school libraries and community libraries and is available through EBSCO, WT Cox, and Discount Magazine, as well as through the magazine website.
ISSN: 2377-1208 (online) ISSN: 2377-1216 (print)
